Home Salon Project

I thought I would write my first post today welcoming you to my website and start by talking about how I transformed my small home space into a full fledged home salon. I hope that this is somewhat useful for any clients interested in seeing the progress and for other techs considering working from home.

How it started:

My salon originally started as a utility room at the back of our house overlooking the garden. Lovely as it is to have the utility room it was more of a dead space that we cluttered with all sorts of junk!

After qualifying in gel nails, manicure and builder gels I decided it would make the perfect cosy little space to carry out my work. I looked into the legal sides, got my insurance and contacted my local council. Once everything was given the go ahead I got stuck into the fun part of setting up my little studio.

This is the room I had to work with - Quite small and doors in all the wrong places but a decent size and has a cloakroom, storage cupboard, a separate private entrance and butlers sink making it perfect for what I needed.

The next image is my mid-way point when I had a temporary set up and was working on family and friends. It was very dull, dark and a lot needed updating!

Results!

The picture below are how the salon looks now. I originally white washed everything, had the desk in a different area and kept it all quite fresh and minimal. After working and living with the space I decided it needed colour to bring the room warmth and interest so I opted for this blush pink feature wall and moved the desk by the window to get more natural light.

I hope that clients will enjoy coming to my salon for treatment as much as I love being in the space. Let me know what you think!

Making the decision of whether to rent a chair in a salon or work from home was a tough one! I found positives and negatives of each but ultimately knew I wanted to work hard for myself. I’ve listed below some of the things I considered from both perspectives incase you are currently trying to make the decision yourself.

My Pros-

• You can set your own hours working less or more when needed making your job fit into you lifestyle. • You can make your own design choices without having to answer to anyone else.

• The satisfaction of being your own boss!

• A more personal one to one experience for your clients.

My Cons-

• Everything is down to you on both the creative and business side. E.g, All policies, safety, taxes, insurance etc is all done by you. • It can be temping to work more hours and cut into your family time as having your workspace at home makes it all too easy!

Despite it’s cons I’m happy with the choice I made to set up a salon from home. It works well for me especially having a 1 year old boy. It’s also rewarding and fun creating your own salon space!

I’d love to hear about how you started your own salon. If your salon was a DIY project send me a email: gelnailsbybecca@gmail.com I’d love to hear from you and feature you on my blog.
